I remember one day sitting at a trade show booth with my sister. Clients would come up to us and ask if we had any number of objects from Velco to copies, to faxes to signs. We’d look at each other with a knowing smile, pretend to bend down and change hats.
One hat said Designer, one said Electrician, on said Copy Girl. Today my hat says Professional Blog Copy Writer.
Being multi talented in today’s marketplace is absolutely key. That is why I’ve collected seven words you can use with certainty.
By the way, the above example is ONLY an story. We didn’t actually change our hats.
Here are 7 rockstar blog words for dummies.
1) Life Hacks I’ve noticed a lot of the seriously smart blogging blogs are using Life Hacks in a positive way. Life Hacks offer simple solutions to every day problems.
2) Wicked As old as this seems I’m still coming across Wicked in in well written headlines. It’s still works. At least on East Coast it was big when I was a wee tot. On the west coast we used a little bit more surf slang. You tell me, do people still use this? I try to use words that I say. I’d never say killer buzz words. It sure looks good in a title though, doesn’t it?
3) Zen Whether it’s Zen Motorcycles or Zen Journey or Zen Habits people love anything that will make their lives more zen like. It’s an art. It conjurs up images of peace. Oaahhhhhmmmmmmm. So I heard you been jammin’ down some gnarly tunes on your guitar?
That is just so wrong on so many levels. This gem was offered by my sister at a summer barbeque.
4) Simplicity I like any website that promises a simpler better life. I remember reading one day less is more. Or was it every day one thing less? My goal in my life is to get everything put away before I die. One thing less. Simple Life, Simple Pleasures, Simple simpleness. Simplify your life. It’s simple.
5) Social Media I love this term. I bought a book at a garage sale from the nice lady. I wanted to keep in touch with her so I asked her if she was on facebook. She said, no I don’t like social media. It was the first time I heard the word. Now it seems to be everywhere and growing. I still can’t use it in a sentence though.
6) Non Conformity If we are living parallel lives as avatars in another planet, I think we’d all be driving Prius’s and living in solar powered houses. The art of non conformity offers EVERYONE the possibility of changing their lives for the better by choosing to do what they love. Be a non conformist. Be a free thinker. Turn off the news. Get informed. Read. Stay informed. Make up your own mind.7) That’s Hot or BFF Thanks Paris. Enough said.
It’s time for reader input
What do you think? I think these words are on their way out: Dude, Alternative, Rad, Stoked, Factoid, Gnarly, Hiney and My Bad.
I think these words are up and coming: SEO, Blog, Social Media, Smile and Nod, Shiny, happiness, writing and Talk to the Hand.

Hey Julie: Regarding your comments about all the many hats we wore — You could add that when people would ask us if we offered a certain type of service, we’d bend down and go under the table and say, “WTF? Do we? Quick! Act like we do! Act like we do!” And you’d say, “What should we charge?” And I’d say, “I don’t know…make it up! Charge him $40 bucks, plus delivery”. My business was more about flying by the seat of our pants and “acting” like the hat we were wearing actually meant that we knew what we were doing!
On a serious note, though…what was cool about my company is that it was 100% about resourcefulness. Customers would come up with all the anxiety of tradeshows, and we’d calmly say, “Relax…we’ve got your back!” …and then they would leave all relieved that someone was taking care of their problems (not knowing that as soon as they left, we’d be freaking out saying, “Great! How are we supposed to make 100 custom buttons in an hour?!” But we always managed to find a way, and the customers were always happy.
Those were the days my friend. We thought they’d never end.
Hi Julie,
I agree. “Hack” is big in blogosphere. When I first saw it, I thought it was rather negative and maybe a little illegal. Now we see “hacks’ everywhere, often meaning quite the opposite.
Zen, on the other hand, might be getting a little over used. After Leo had such great success with his blog, it seems like many have tried to copy him by including “Zen” in their name. I say, ‘be original”. After all, who else will name a blog, “blogging without a blog”? LOL
Hi Barbara
You take the time to get to know your readers as well as us new around the block. You offer good and personal advice. Thank you so much for that.
I agree with you about Zen being every where. Great job at getting the word blog in your title TWICE. I wonder if there’s a record!

I love ‘hiney’. Uh, that didn’t come out right.
My grandmother would try to teach us kids some Czech words when we were little. One word meant a ‘chicken’s hiney’, her words exactly. Why she taught use that I will never know, but I still remember how to say it.
Then again, she could have been making it all up. Good memories.
I also like Awesome and any word I can create by using a hyphen and tricking spell-check into believing is legit.
Hey Anne,
You’re funny. I would write lol, but I actually did laugh to myself. I like hiney. I don’t why I wrote that. Most of the time I’m typing with a smile on my face and wondering why no one is editing. In one of my posts I wrote about some important ah huh historical facts and thought I wonder if some one will check this.
I’m extremely curious to know how to say a ‘chicken’s hiney’ in Czech. I only know one Russian word from my grandfather and it was ‘Tibulah’, although I’ve checked with many sources that and only one confirmed it. It’s supposed to mean little bird.

There’s a friend in my ceramics class whose name is tibellie. pronounced the way grandpa said it. If she comes to class tonight, I’ll ask her what it means
Re social media…… Lisa told me a couple of weeks ago that there are over 30,000 people a day joining facebook
Hey mom, for being a mom you sure are smart. Thanks for keeping me informed. : )
