If I can figure out how to write a blog, anyone can.

Would you like to write? Please do.

If you would like to be a published writer, it’s easy, just do it. I started writing as soon as I got a crayon in my hand.

When I was 11, I started keeping a small lock and key diary with a bright yellow and red Snoopy picture. I would write whatever came to an 11 year-old’s mind.

I have entries in my diary about what I would do for my birthday party, where my family went and who I liked and didn’t like at school. The diary entry that makes me laugh is My sister hit me. Now I realize the importance of those four words.

I found a place for myself, a place to put my own thoughts but most importantly I have proof 30 years later that my sister hit me. ;)

As I got older, I started writing travel diaries. I have about 15 handwritten diaries in my garage that I wrote when I was between 19 and 30.

I like to keep a journal while I’m travelling. I like reading them after a number of years has past as reading the words brings me right back to the place I wrote them.

If you want to write, do it. Just take out a pen and write.

How to get published.

The first time I got published as a writer I was in high school. It helped to have friends. I was president of my high school so the job was sort of just assigned to me. One of my teachers came up to me and said Julie, you are going to have to write a weekly article for the school newspaper.

A couple of weeks later, I saw my name in print for the first time with a headline saying Howdy Cowboys. What a laugh.

From then, I moved to Europe and remained one of the few people who actually knew English so it was pretty much certain that I would get published in the first English magazine in our city. Luckily for me, the publisher was a good friend of mine. She had great taste in style and the magazine was a big success in my humble opinion.

From there, I just continued writing. I would write or suggest stories to my publisher and she usually printed them. Sometimes, my publisher friend, Ali,  would give me assignments, for example she’d say Julie, there’s a new art opening on Friday, can you cover it? I continue to write for pleasure just as I continue to paint pictures of flowers, just as I love reading other people’s stories.

Also, I would suggest you write from the heart and write as you speak. Finally the easiest way to get published is to publish yourself — just as I am doing here.

Thank you for visiting. Comments are appreciated. Have a great day.

Have you ever been published? What sort of things do you like to write about?

I’d love to hear if you’d like to leave a comment below. Thanks.

  1. Writing is not one of my strengths, but I do admire people who have a way with words. Enjoy reading your blog. Keep the words flowing, your doing a great job!!!

  2. Oh double G! You don’t know how much I appreciate the feedback at this early stage. I feel frustrated and excited trying out all of my options. I have a mentor and that is helping me tremendously. You ARE good with words. We all are. Listen, send me a link to your photos ok on facebook and I will feature it here if that is ok by you!

  3. Well, sometimes I try and remember to write when I am in a bad mood. Getting it out on paper gets it out of my mind, at least for a moment.

  4. I’ve read some of the stuff I have written throughout the years and I may as well as make copies and just paste them on the new paper – I say the same things over and over. Does anything ever change?

  5. For many years now – beginning in high school – I have kept a diary of sorts writing down all of my learning experiences. I wasn’t so much focused on writing about my day-to-day ventures and undertakings, but rather more concerned about breaking down the psychological experiences that were shaping my life on a daily basis.

Today this diary provides me with the content and inspiration to pursue my passion for writing online.

  6. Adam – thank you from the heart for you comment. As you can see my webpage is only a couple of weeks old so I truly appreciate any constructive criticism. I love how a diary can capture a moment in your life just as a picture can. Hopefully when we look back at the experiences that have shaped our lives we can learn from them.

A special thanks again for being my mentor and my coach.

Following your recent posts my viewings have gone way up. I plan on these numbers to grow as I continue to read and learn.

  7. Julie,

I’ll never be a famous writer, but I have a lot of fun.

My number one rule when I got started was to try to figure out how my writing might help someone else. I began by doing newspaper write-ups about music shows. At first they were just letters to the editor.

When the bands had folks come to see them play because of my articles they started to introduce me to everyone as a writer. When the newspaper realized the bands were telling people to read their newspaper, the paper hired me to write some articles.

It has grown from there, but I still go by the same rule.

Truthfully, this was a really outstanding post. In hypothesis I’d like to drop a line like this too – taking time and real effort to make a complete article… but what can I say… I dilly-dally a lot and never seem to get something done.

  9. Dear Rosa,

Thank you so much for your comment. Today you motivated me to write my best. Lately I have been concentrating on making positive changes in my life through positive visualizations AND more importantly structure of thought. What that means stated simply is instead of telling yourself ‘I never seem to get something done’, you can say ‘Today I managed to get one thing done’. Your mind can be reprogrammed. The internal messages that we play in our heads get reinforced. Make sure that when you are walking or shopping you find the positive and you repeat it aloud, to yourself, or write it down. It’s the greatest gift we have: the gift of choice. Choose good.

Have a great day. I hope you come back and visit again.
    Julie

  10. Are you really my daughter?

  11. Yes pops I am. You never know what one of your kids is going to be up to! Don’t worry, we’re keeping it all on the up and up. Only good stuff here. ; )

  12. Thanks for this information. Was doing a Google search and stumbled across this post. I enjoyed it so much that I bookmarked it. To Boot, I will be coming back for more so be sure to keep posting!

  13. nice post!! Even i enjoy writing!! Only a few of my articles have been published though! Keep writing! Would love to read more!

  14. Interesting post. I just recently realized how much I love writing. I just started my blog and I don’t know much about it. I’m not sure anyone will be interested in what I have to say but I really enjoy the writing part of it, even if I’m not the best. I’m changing my major in school to communications which will involve a ton of writing. I’m excited but I’m also nervous about it. But your post is inspiring and good advice to an amateur like me. Thanks. :)

  15. I do want to write. I always have. But I haven’t ever put the pen to paper much. I’m working on that now. I doubt it will ever turn into anything, but I’m okay with that, I’m not trying to be a writer, just trying to write.
