People who read this — God bless you — know that I had to overcome a lot of fears to set up this blog. Would you like to know why?

Because writing for the public is similar to public speaking. You talk to people and they can smile, judge, laugh, agree or disagree. Sometimes they throw tomatoes right at the computer screen. I don’t suggest it.

Believe in yourself. I do.

Believe in yourself. I do, believe in you.

I like to emphasize the learning by doing aspect. For example, if any of you have ever travelled, I bet that what you saw first hand is different than what you read in books. It’s like a thousand reflections in a mirror. Until you go and experience something first hand, they are all just stories on a page.

Writing a blog is an ongoing learning experience. Please don’t think I know what I’m doing. I’m rather new to this @$#% blgng bznss.

it was the exact same feeling when I first showed my art work. Sure, some people have no problems writing and talking and showing off their work.

I do. That is EXACTLY why I feel like this blog is growing steadily. It’s because I’m so darn afraid of failing, I putting every ounce of myself into making succeed.

I am willing to take a risk and show you my work. Put DOWN that tomato. If you want to succeed in today’s market, I believe you must be willing to talk about your work.

It is not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to

I don’t see what is wrong with it blogging. Like I told my blogger friend, it’s fat free. Unless, of course, you are eating a lot of food while writing.

I also love reading and studying and learning from other people. That’s why I spend a lot of time on other people’s blogs to see how they approach the same question as mine.

How do you, as a blogger or website owner, reach an audience, connect with them, share information, and grow as an individual?

Give and ye shall receive. No, it’s ask and ye shall receive, isn’t it?

I’m willing to try. I’m willing to learn. In the meantime, I hope this post finds you happy, lovely, lucky and in love.

Hello friends. Good to see you. New visitors welcome.

It’s another beautiful day. There is a smell of fresh brewed coffee. The kids are playing and the sun is shining. I live out in the country surrounded by fields of vegetables and orchards.

Because of what is called the lowlands, in the morning there is a nice white fog that extends the distance. It looks as if God painted a huge moving glorious postcard.

Sometimes while I’m driving to work, I see this white fog after a snow fall. It’s quite magical actually. It reminds me of the scene in Narnia when Lucy enters into the magical forrest.

I’d have to say it’s my favorite time of the day when you are between two places, home and work, just looking at the countryside, watching the birds take off. I see the same man jogging rain or shine.

Figure it out, figure it out, if you don't know how to do it, figure it out.

I notice the colors of the old withering farmhouses. I try to think of words that describe the soft colors of Italy.

The best words that I can come up with are soft butter, avocado and peach. Most of the old buildings are crumbling. I dream that I rebuild the home into a villa. Then I think, no, why would I do that? It’s so beautiful just the way it is.

The anticipation for spring is so strong, your hearts and minds start to see flowers. It’s a thrilling moment when the same snow covered field one day blooms. As we drive past fields of flowers, our family likes to say the colors, pink, pink, yellow, red, white, look, there’s purple.

Foggy mornings turning into sunshine days. Yeah!

It is nice to have you here with me. When I was just a little girl hum Doris Day, I wanted to be a published writer. I bought the beautiful empty diaries with angel covers. The first entry on the first page was always exciting with the anticipation of what I would write.

Life presents us with the solutions we are looking for.

As I write, I think of the people who have come across my words. Is writing crazy? Is it the same as talking to yourself in the mirror? If so, or, if not, even if people comment, the actual ACT of writing is me talking to me, right? Or is is you? See the confusion? I do. It’s ok though.

Be awesome. Be authentic.  Be inspirational.

Zero to Blog the film, the movie, the ebook

My ebook, Zero to Blog has been a journey of it’s own. I feel like the book wrote itself because it is information presented in a clear way to help people get their blogs on line.

I painted these for my sister. I see them when we Skype.

As a blog writer you have to figure it all out. I like that though. As my Uncle says, Figure it out, figure it out, if you don’t know how to do it, figure it out.

I suppose I watched too much TV and thought there was an actual book launch party. Maybe there are. In my real life, it didn’t quite go that way. The book launch party idea was to have a giveaway and a book signing. Well, it’s a digital book.

No bookstore. No signing. Or, digital bookstore online books signing party!

Beautiful just the way it is.

♥ Be inspiring.

Once when my kids were little I took them to the beach on a vacation camping.

The following day, I drove back home defeated.

It’s been about three or four years since I have braved taking my kids to the beach on my own. Finally, I got some courage to spend a week seaside.

How did it go?

My friends on facebook are sending me messages hoping that I have survived. I am back at my computer and house alive, relaxed, tan, and feeling quite amazing actually.

I’m from southern California. I have been living in Italy for 15 or 16 years now. It’s so different. I know in my about Julie contact page I mentioned that after a while, the differences between the two countries, USA and Italy seem to mix, but since I just got back from the beach, I’m going to try to convey them to you here now.

California beach ~ wide, open, relaxing, breath taking, cold water, big waves, surfing, never ending horizon, beautiful sunsets, beach bike path on the sand.

Italian beach ~ semi crowded, clean, organized, rows of umbrellas and chaise lounges lined up like soldiers. Toys, families, hours on the sand, trampolines, jumpy jumpy things, slides and tons of food at organized hours. Kids free to play in an enclosed safe environment until late.

I just didn’t cook much. I went out for all of my meals which if you know is the same as admitting to sin in this country. We spent our days in the water, at the beach, taking long bike rides and playing in the park.

♥ Believe in yourself ~ give yourself a break. ♥

Italians love their food. In fact, I had home made sauce jarred in the fridge as well as home made pesto. It was perfect. I gave it to my neighbor. Please don’t tell my mother in law. She went to a lot of trouble to get that there for me. I just couldn’t get over the idea of having to wash dishes.

I read a lot.

I was an extra good vacationer.

I lied on my beach bed for hours. The kids played endlessly. They both made friends, came home sun kissed and lovely. We bought lots of toys and plan on going back if and when I find the courage.

I certainly missed my blog and facebook friends. I have an online community that has become a big part of my life.

Every Three Minutes

We got back from our second vacation. Boy are these kids in Italy spoiled when it comes to summer vacation. I spent the last two summers in California, so this is a new experience for me ~ that is, staying here in Italy. The kids have spent tons of time at the beach playing. Then they came home and we all left for the mountains for a week.

Believe it or not we still have a couple more vacations lined up our sleeves, but they are top secret. :) It looks like we are getting a much longer vacation than the states as school is slated to start September 15th.

I love coming home after being away. You get a fresh look at things. It’s peaceful and calm.

What I didn’t expect would happen is that da boyz would grow up over night. When they were littler, I heard my name called non stop round the clock. Then suddenly, seriously, from yesterday to today,

silence.

It’s a crazy silence. It’s beautiful and sweet, but boy do I miss them. They have been out playing with their friends and haven’t come home for any reason what-so-ever. I keep going outside and asking them if they are hungry. I have hamburgers ready for them in the oven. It’s so sad that we love our kids with all of our hearts and then they grow up.

My mom told me that all of my life. She said, you’ll see, one day. Now I see. So?! What’s the point? We did a good job? Yes, we did. Still, the silence is loud, the burgers are ready and today, now, at this moment, I miss my boyz calling me, bugging me, every three minutes.

I don’t think I can find one person out there who can argue that the launch of Tana’s blog, From Kenya with Love, last week was a complete success.

This is a clear case of the student jumping leaps and bounds over the teacher. That’s what I mean when I say that the learning is in the doing. I learn from you. It’s hard to explain, but here goes.

A couple of weeks ago Tana won a copy of my book Zero to Blog on my facebook giveaway. She told be that before she got to page 53 she had published her blog.

That’s when the journey began. The two of us have been laughing, publishing, growing and sharing. I hope you are joining us for the fun and thinking about how you too are going to start your blog.

Why did Tana’s blog get 800 visitors in the first two days it was up?

I’ll tell you exactly why.

1) She read my downloadable book Zero to Blog.
2) She took a risk.
3) She’s funnier than heck, sometimes silly too.
4) She tells REAL stories from the heart that are changing lives.

In my cool skype interview with her that lasted a couple of hours I found out some truly amazing information about what it is like to live in Africa.

I think she might have learned something about living in Italy.

♥ It’s dangerous as you want it to be. Like when I moved to Italy and everyone said watch out for your purse. They say the same about Americans. It’s just fear guys. Don’t let it stop you from living.

♥ Oh ~ love you.

Like any country you learn where to go and where not to, there is crime everywhere in the world. That should not stop you.  Just learn how to protect yourself, listen to your instincts.  You get to know yourself even better by putting yourself out there. It is an amazing world with colourful people and wildlife.

♥ My sweet long blonde haired blue eyed goddess, single mom of three equally beautiful daughters had a charmed life that I think it is fair to say we can all envy. She GREW up with a lion raised in captivity, named Zamba.

She also suffered the heart ache and loss that comes with that intense love, I can only imagine.

♥ We spoke about how wonderful animals are for therapy, especially used for kids in schools. The way it works is the kids spend time with the animals and bond. I’d like to explain it better but I think you get the point.

♥ Her pops ~ I looked her dad up on wikipedia. Her dad, Frank Helfer, wrote a few books and I cannot wait to read them. Here’s all the info about her dad’s books and him.

♥ Tana and I have had a couple of fans. We love our fans. We worry when they go over board. She’s been in magazines such as Teen, People and TV Guide. I haven’t.

♥ I worked with Tom Cruise. Hold your breath guys. The story is forth coming. Maybe.

19 reasons teaching is entertaining and inspirational.

Hey guys, welcome back. New visitors, welcome.

I started my blog three months ago. I have had over 3.000 visitors, made a video, published an eBook and made some great new friends.

I can’t tell if I’m talking to my sister, to myself or to the world. I’ll use my friend’s wisdom to concentrate on speaking to a small group of people.

True Story

Yesterday I had the honor of being asked to substitute teach a class of twelve year olds. If any of you recall, substitute teaching sucks can be entertaining. Usually, it’s pretty hard to keep the students contained and a lot of the times they like to take advantage of the situation.

Not with me. I’ve been teaching now for 15 years and I’ve learned some great ways of getting attention, holding it and mezmerizing my students into using their imaginations and smiles.

Here’s something that works:

Just sit there and don’t talk.

I can do this for about two minutes.

I decided yesterday with this new group to just have a talk about what it’s like to be an American living in Italy.

First period 8 a.m., sleepy and happy.

I walk into class of 19 completely new faces. I introduce myself and tell the class I am happily married, have two kids, come from a good family and write a blog. I talk about what I feel is most important these days: being a good person, helping other people and flossing.

You see guys, kids these days have an entire new set of self discovery tools. A lot of the times, they don’t know how to make friends. A lot of them are shy, a lot of them are hysterically funny.

When they asked if my kids were bilingual, which they are, I found out that this small group of 19 kids came from all over the world including France, Sweden, Africa, Germany, Portugal, Bulgaria and Spain. Who would have known? I mistakenly thought they were all Italians.

Welcome.

I asked them if they had any questions.

Prof. In America, how do people get around?
I told them it depends on if you live in a big city or in the country. I told them how in New York city people take taxis, walk, bike or take the metro.

I told them in Los Angeles most people use their cars. I told them about how vast Los Angeles is, sprawling. I told them it takes two hours at least to drive from one side to the other.

How about you? Where you live how do you get around? I use a car although a lot of people take the bus. My neighbors all get around with bikes, God bless them.

Any more questions?

Prof, what is your favorite food?
That is a question that makes me love teaching. You see, kids are so cute and sweet and sincere that to them any question is a good one. I told them if I were to find myself on a desert island without any food, the one thing I would wish for more than anything would be a nice pizza. They all smiled.

They asked me if in America people ate Italian food.

I told them that America is made up of people from all over the world. Thanks to these influences Americans are given fantastic choices of foods such as Chinese, Mexican, Japanese, or Indian to start.

We talked about sports and identifying with famous people. You see these kids are just out of their little kid bodies wearing big people bodies. They look grown but they are just kids. When they write me essays about what they think, you can read anything and everything under the sun.

The class told me how one kid spends at least eight hours a day playing video games. He was over weight and sort of shy. It worried me. I told him I hope he finds a better balance in his life that includes learning, sports and some social activities. I’m not one to dish out the advice. I KNOW NOTHING. I just listen.

I told the kind bright kids I’m more than happy to have a discussion just as long as it’s in an orderly manner. They seemed to like that.

When the bell rang, I was approached by at least six of the students who told be about their various projects, magic vegetables, friends visiting from abroad who didn’t speak the language. They were so cute, beautiful actually, fresh and smiling.

I left the class smiling thanking God for the new experiences He presents me.

Life is participation.

I don’t know about you but I keep coming across one crazier story than the next. Humanity always seems to surprise me. For example, I’m reading stories about real stalkers, robbers, ATM blow ups, unfortunate home violence, earthquakes, and flying machines. Yeah right.

I started this blog four months ago and either I think I’m Crazy News Central or my readers do. Welcome. You might be new here, so please make sure to add a bookmark above, follow me on facebook or follow me on twitter.

I KEEP getting some fairly random messages and emails, one more surprising than the last. It must be me. I attract the nutters? Not you, obviously, them. Let’s try to get it on the page and make some sense of it all.

I had a talk yesterday with one of my best friends about having over 300 friends on facebook. She said I think you should just stick to a core group of friends.

Hmmm. Made me think.

When I started this blog I had 200 friends, now I have over 300. I’m still the same person sitting at my macbook type typing away. When I started this blog I was writing to my cat. I now have 6,000+ visitors.

After I thought about it I got back to her and told her, Yes, you’re right, you must know who your true friends are. However, I do believe that with internet our lives have become more global. We have to now think in new shiny ways. We are no longer limited to our direct surroundings.

The world is getting smaller. Heck, you can book your own travel. Now THAT’S what I call progress.

What really amazes me is how these names and profile pictures are ACTUALLY real truly wonderful people who have taken a minute out of their day to read my blog. I thank you for that.

You meet them, you share part of your life with them, and believe it or not, you both influence each other and the lives of people around you. Are our comments just random thoughts in each other’s lives? Or, do you think about them, mull them over in your head during the day or before going to sleep?

As my mom friend put it, Julie, you really are busy. :)

Keep hitting the clear history option in my internet browser, but my history is still there. ;) Anyone have a quick fix, life hack?

By the way, we are doing really well on promoting our little event in our little town. So far we have organized a little stand with coffee, water, drinks, ice cream, and a little bbq with hamburgers and hotdogs. That’s it. That’s the big plan.

The parents have offered to man the booth if I can figure out how to set up the gazebo thing~a~ma~jig. One sweet grandpa in particular is bringing an air popper for popcorn.

Another has offered to donate a coffee machine. My friend and I are painting park benches the worst color or rust I have ever seen.* The mayor of our little town is going to throw the first pitch of the season. He’s hot a handsome gentleman by the way, in case you haven’t noticed.

We’ve organized the event for May 1st, 4:00 p.m. Come!

Now that it’s all organized and going well, I can’t help but think, was it worth all of the trouble? Many words, hours, meetings, fun, ideas, new jackets, pictures and press are all flying about. But seriously, folks, haven’t we got better things to do? Apparently not.

Swim AWAY from the Cake – updated motivational technique.

I am putting every ounce of myself to becoming a better blogger, writer and communicator. More importantly is that I am trying to make a positive change in life. Thank for visiting if this is your first time here. Welcome back visitors, feel free to leave comments.

What motivates you?

My best friend Anne Marie kicks my bum in tennis and probably anyone else’s. When we were playing at university we were great partners. We spent our time between matches actually doing cartwheels on the court. We were paired up with a couple of Chinese guys who were so serious about tennis. One day our coach pulls us aside and assigns us new partners. ‘Not the Chinese, Not the Chinese’ we chanted – they’d kill us at tennis. Sure enough, Anne Marie and I found fantastic new partners.

I’m building bridges here.

Stay with me folks. There IS a reason I’m telling you this.

The reason is this. When I am in the class room in front of my students I ask them ‘What motivates you most?’ Is it someone who comes over, puts your hand on your shoulder, smiles, and says good job, or is the person who gets behind you and yells ‘DO IT!’?

When I was on swim team in high school, my sister was my best motivator. She’d follow me back and forth across the lanes and scream ‘Go Julie!’ Her coaching strategy was swim toward the chocolate cake and away from the shark.

Just pretend

Be a kid and pretend you are the best. Walk across the room at this moment as if you have a cape on your back, I don’t care if anyone’s watching – all the better. Our mind will literally follow suit.

When Anne Marie and I were back playing singles tennis, she’d say ‘Julie – You’re going down’ with such conviction, I had no other choice then to let her win. Ha ha ha, Anne Marie, who’s getting the last laugh now?

Point is, get out there, do your best. That’s all we can ask, isn’t it?

Lay over in London Summer 2009

These are my boys at London Heathrow on a layover.

When I told people I was taking my kids to Los Angeles for two months I was greeted as usual with the nay-sayers and head nodders. I admit, nothing motivates me more than when I tell someone I am going to do something and people look at me like I am attempting something impossible.

What’s the big deal? Buy a ticket, get on a plane, get off a plane and arrange for transportation and accommodation.

Surely I am not the only the only person who decides to spend the summer with their family.

In this picture you can see my two boys as we stopped in London for a couple of hours. We left early in the morning from our home town in Bologna, Italy, stopped in London then continued to Los Angeles. I love arriving in Los Angeles. The first thing I always notice is the smell of the ocean. I can feel it on my face too. Then I notice how the cars seem cleaner and shinier – and bigger too.

It was 4a.m. Italy time when we arrived and I can assure you that the time it took to get the rental car was by far the hardest part of the trip. I booked the best deal I could find on a trust worthy website with a well known car rental company. I just must have been too out of it when we got the car because I ran into trouble.

First of all, I was holding my youngest son, 5, in my arms because he was still sleeping. Secondly, EVEN THOUGH I had confirmed many times that the company would accept my rental car insurance through my credit card – the man at the desk wouldn’t release the car to me unless I bought their added insurance coverage.

At 4a.m. I would sign away anything. Remarkably I still had some wits about me. I managed to get the boys and car seats in the rental car, drive to my friends house and stay up most of the night booking a better car. I had no choice. The insurance that the man at the rental car company was trying to sell me would have eaten a big hole in my vacation budget.

All things squared thanks to friends who square us out. I still had a severe case of jet lag yet we managed to get a new car. The point I am trying to make is like the title says, If I can do it, anyone can. I am a firm believer in the power of positive thinking. Thought is things. Thinking is believing. Believing is doing.
